Prevent Eye Injuries During Physical Sport Activities – Sports Eye Safety Month

Adopting an active lifestyle is a great way to stay healthy. Playing sports is a great way for kids and adults to get their daily dose of physical activity. Whether it’s a pickup game of basketball or an organized soccer game, playing sports can make you healthier and happier because of the physical activity involved. Muscle development, coordination, cardiovascular health and numerous other benefits associated with disease prevention are attributed to playing sports.

April is Sports Eye Safety Month

It’s also essential to remember the importance of eye health when engaging in physical sport activities. As a friendly reminder, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has designated April as Sports Eye Safety Month. ReVision LASIK and Cataract Surgery is proud to support this public awareness campaign and is a strong advocate for proactive vision care and educating patients on LASIK, cataract and corneal procedures that enhance vision quality.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, tens of thousands of sports and recreation-related eye injuries occur each year with the risk of injury varying depending on the activity. Any sport in which balls, racquets or flying objects are present pose a potential risk for eye injury.

The good news is 90 percent of serious eye injuries are preventable through the use of appropriate protective eyewear. Fortunately, coaches, parents and players now realize the importance of wearing protective eyewear. More and more athletes from the major leagues to the peewee leagues wear sport goggles as part of their game day uniform.

Choosing the Correct Sports Eyewear Protection

It’s important to note that prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses and even on-the-job industrial safety glasses typically do not provide adequate protection for sports use.

Lenses in sports eyewear are made of polycarbonate – an impact-resistant material – to protect eyes from fast-moving objects. It also has built-in ultraviolet protection which provides additional eye protection during outdoor sports. Sports goggles are made in a variety of shapes and sizes with some specifically designed to fit in helmets.

The purpose of sport eyewear is to provide eye protection, not vision correction. Because of this, many adults who participate in sports and regular physical activity choose to have a LASIK vision correction procedure.

Enjoy the Benefits of LASIK When Participating in Physical Activities

LASIK provides athletes with the freedom and comfort of clear vision while participating in physical activities. Contacts and glasses are no longer needed to hit the ball, catch a pass or score a goal. After LASIK, the only eyewear an athlete needs to wear while playing the sports they love is protective sport goggles.

ReVision LASIK and Cataract Surgery provides complimentary LASIK vision consultations for active adults who enjoy participating in sports and other recreational activities.
