Putting the ‘See’ in Sea Lions

The sea lions at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s Adventure Cove have a unique connection with ReVision LASIK & Cataract Surgery. What’s the connection? Vision!

Eye Drops Help Sea Lions See

Eye drops are part of a sea lion’s daily care to help maintain healthy eyes throughout their lifetime in an aquatic environment. Of course, sea lions aren’t accustomed to taking eye drops, so the Zoo’s Animal Care team first had to teach each animal the process. Trainers administer two types of eye drops multiple times each day to help ensure the sea lions are experiencing comfortable, clear vision.

As a vision care provider, ReVision has been delivering vision solutions to humans for over two decades. Eye drops are essential to LASIK, cataract, and corneal procedures performed at the practice, in addition to the treatment of conditions such as dry eye disease and glaucoma.

Like Humans, Sea Lions Can Develop Cataracts

Another similarity to human vision care is sea lions can also experience loss of vision quality as they age due to cataracts. The Animal Care Team shared how they identify vision issues in sea lions and train them to undergo successful cataract removal procedures to restore clear vision for these amazing aquatic animals.

A donation through the ReVision Gives Back charitable giving program allows us to be part of proactive eye care initiatives for the sea lions at Adventure Cove! As the ReVision Gives Back honoree for the month of October, ReVision’s donation will help fund the purchase of eye drops for the sea lions. “Seeing the world with the best possible vision is the greatest experience anyone – human or animal – can enjoy,” says Dr. James Schumer, Founder and Ophthalmologist at ReVision.

Volunteers Are Vital

October is a busy month at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The nonprofit welcomes visitors every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to experience Boo At The Zoo, a unique Halloween tradition. Children explore the zoo dressed in costume while stopping at numerous Treat Stations to trick-or-treat. Members of the ReVision Team were happy to lend their services for an afternoon to distribute candy at this volunteer-led event.

ReVision is excited to support the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium while educating the community about the unique care needs of the sea lions and the importance of vision care for all.
